Cody Ko
It is a very real possibility that I never heard of Cody Ko until just now. I was not a crazy vine fan and rarely watched youtube videos other than the occasional makeup tutorial (because what girl can say they have not watched at least one??). After watching the video, his comedic sense of humor does not seem unlike mine. I found the video very hilarious and I will most likely watch more of his videos. The way Alexis analyzed this video in terms of the superiority theory is, in my opinion, completely accurate. The whole point of this entire video is to mock the man who is still a virgin and the way he acts around girls. The title of the video is "that's cringe" implying that it is cringy to be a 34-year-old virgin. However, when Alexis analyzed the video in terms of the benign violation theory, I would have to somewhat disagree. I do not believe that the video Skippy created was benign at all because watching him talk to girls was often very uncomfortable which was what I found funny. I agree that the narration by Cody and Noel was definitely a violation, however, I feel that it still fits into the superiority theory the best. I do not believe that this video had any aspect of a benign connotation and would argue that the superiority theory is what is at play here.

I had the same reaction to the benign violation theory application. I don't think there's much benign about this. If skippy is benign, it just makes it more awkward. and if it's their attitude, it's pretty darn mean. So, I think this is a great example of a difficult piece of comedy to analyze!
ReplyDeleteAwesome post, Faith! I definitely agree with your ideas about benign violation theory in this instance. The producers of "The Virgin Diaries" are completely aware that the content isn't benign because the purpose is to laugh at the awkwardness of the show. So in order to find Cody and Noel's video funny, you would have to enjoy their sense of superiority humor.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your post, especially when you stated your point that the benign violation theory would not apply to the Cody Ko video. After hearing your reasoning, I would somewhat have to agree because there is not much of a benign aspect being incorporated. One could argue how Skippy acting somewhat childish and innocent is benign, but I still believe that superiority is the best theory to explain this piece of comedy.
